Spain: Motorway blocked with burning tires in Catalan separatist trial protest near Girona
Pro-Catalan independence activists set fire to tires on the AP7 motorway near Girona on Thursday, in protest against the ongoing trial of a dozen Catalan leaders and politicians in Madrid.
The fiery blockade caused traffic to come to a standstill in both directions of the motorway, with lorries and cars stuck in a kilometre-long tailback.
The demonstrations are part of a general strike called throughout Catalonia that has seen barricades erected all along the motorway as well as similar actions on the railways.
Former Catalan vice president Oriol Junqueras, former interior minister Joaquim Forn, and former president of the Catalan parliament Carme Forcadell are among a dozen figures facing charges for their part in the 2017 referendum and subsequent push for independence from Spain.
Nine of the defendants are charged with rebellion, while other charges include sedition and misuse of public funds. If convicted, the Catalan leaders on trial face up to 25 years in jail.
