Hundreds of women gathered in front of Argentina's National Congress in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, to demand the legalisation of elective abortion.

Demonstrators chanted slogans and waved green handkerchiefs, which is the symbol of Argentina's pro-choice campaign.

"The body is our first sovereign territory that is the one that we have to liberate because we still lack freedoms," said one of the women.

"Abortion exists and has to do with the decision of the women who want to decide about our bodies and those who die are those who end up doing it in very poor health situations," stressed another demonstrator.

In 2018 the Argentine Senate rejected a bill to legalise abortions after it had gone through the lower house of Congress.
