Belgium: North Macedonia takes seat at NATO defence ministers' table

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg shook hands with the Defence Minister of newly-named North Macedonia Radmila Sekerinska in Brussels on Wednesday, whose country received a seat at the defence ministers' meeting for the first time in history after signing a NATO accession protocol.

"We really appreciate the progress you have made. And without your commitment, without your leadership of you personally and of your government we would not have been able to be where we are today, inviting you to this defence ministerial meeting," said Stoltenberg.

"I'm here to pledge our firm belief that we can commit, that we can follow with action, with deeds, with measures, to contribute to our joint stability and to contribute to NATO," vowed Sekerinska.

On February 6, Macedonian officials signed the NATO accession protocol in Brussels. Representatives of all 29 NATO members also signed the protocol, which will make the Republic of North Macedonia NATO's 30th member should it be ratified by each state.

Earlier, the parliaments in both Skopje and Athens ratified a deal to rename the country from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the Republic of North Macedonia, settling an old dispute and paving the way for its possible accession to NATO. The deal was met with protests in both countries.
