Russia: Investigative Committee opens criminal case against 'whale prison'
Russia's Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case over animal abuse after inspecting the enclosures where 90 beluga whales and 11 orcas are being kept in the Nakhodka Bay in far eastern Primorski Krai, as footage released on Thursday shows.
Inspection of the compound belonging to the Centre for the Adaptation of Marine Mammals showed that the mammals are being held in "inadequate conditions", according to the officials.
The authorities reportedly plan to release the mammals from the “whale prison”, as the enclosure has been dubbed by the media.
