UK: Egypt demands return of Giza Pyramid stone if legality not verified

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities requested that Scotland's National Museum provides documentation proving that a casing stone from the Great Pyramid of Giza set to go on display along with other ancient Egyptian artifacts on February 8, had been legally transferred from Egypt. The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities said that they would demand that the stone is returned back to Egypt if the museum fails to provide the necessary documentation.

Footage filmed in Edinburgh on Tuesday, shows the casing stone, which was reportedly obtained from the Great Pyramid of Giza, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu.

The Khufu's pyramid stone will be displayed along with other Egyptian artifacts as part of the museum's first permanent display of its Egyptology collection dubbed 'Rediscovering Ancient Egypt.'

The ancient stone is believed to be some 4,500 years old. The stone is allegedly one of the few surviving casing stones, which formed the outer surface of the Khufu pyramid. According to lead curator of the Ancient Egypt exhibition at Scotland's National Museum, Margaret Maitland, the casing stone "was brought about 15 kilometres down river from Giza to be the outer casing of the pyramid."

Maitland noted that the stone "was discovered in rubble at the base of the pyramid during work that was being carried out on behalf of Charles Piazzi Smyth," who she said "conducted what was really the first largely accurate survey of the Great Pyramid to date in the 1860s."

The National Museum of Scotland is set to open the permanent exhibition that explores more than 4,000 years of ancient Egyptian history.

The exhibition will feature around 7,000 Egyptian artifacts, including a Sphinx statue and a coffin of an unknown Egyptian queen.
