Pope Francis met with the Grand Imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayeb and members of the Muslim Council of Elders on Monday, at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, ahead of an interfaith conference, as part of the pope's first Gulf visit.

Earlier on Monday, the Head of the Catholic Church was received by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed at the Presidential Palace. The Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also attended the ceremony.

Pope Francis and the Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb will later attend the closing ceremony of the Human Fraternity Meeting at the Founders Memorial.

The historic two-day visit of the pontiff to the Arabian Peninsula started on Sunday night, when his plane landed at the Abu Dhabi airport. The official visit will conclude on Tuesday, when Pope Francis will attend an open-air mass at Zayed Sports City, an event expected to be attended by some 135,000 people.
