Russia: Moscow to suspend INF Treaty as ‘symmetrical response’ to US – Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Moscow's intention to suspend observance of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty as "a symmetrical response" to Washington's latest move. He spoke at a joint meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Saturday.

"We will give a symmetrical response. The US partners announced the suspension of their observance of the Treaty, so do we. We suspend observance," Putin said.

The INF Treaty, originally signed in 1987 by US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, to eliminate the US and Soviet stocks of intermediate-range and shorter-range landed-based missiles. The treaty bans missiles with ranges between 500 and 1,000 km (310-620 miles) and those between 1,000-5,500 kilometers (620 miles - 3,417 miles).

In October 2018, US President Donald Trump threatened to pull out from the treaty, accusing Russia of violating its terms. Washington has claimed that Russia's 9M729 missile system exceeds the 500-kilometre (310-mile) range allowed by the INF Treaty. Russia, however, has denied the allegation.

In December 2018, Washington said that they would start the withdrawal process from the treaty within a 60-day period if Russia does not return to compliance.

Last week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington is suspending its obligations under the INF and will pull out from the agreement in six months if Russia does not return to compliance.
