Russia: Putin holds Security Council meeting over upcoming US withdrawal from INF Treaty
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with members of the Security Council of Russia in Moscow on Friday to discuss the political situation in Venezuela and the US intention to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
Washington plans to begin its unilateral withdrawal from the treaty on February 2. The move comes after negotiations in the Swiss city of Geneva fell through on Tuesday.
The agreement, originally signed by the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987, bans land-launched nuclear missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometres (310- 3,420 miles).
Last October, US President Donald Trump threatened to pull out of the treaty, accusing Russia of violating its terms.
According to Washington's claim, Russian 9M729 missile system has a range greater than 500 kilometres. Russia, however, has denied the allegation.
