State of Palestine: Palestinian artist brings Japanese origami to Gaza

Palestinian Territory, Occupied, Gaza Strip
January 30, 2019 at 16:24 GMT +00:00 · Published

29-year old Palestinian artist Ahmed Humaid from Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp has found an unlikely medium, the Japanese art of paper folding, to create stunning origami book sculptures, as footage filmed in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday shows.

The artist appears to give a twist to the traditional art of paper folding by forming the pages of entire books into readable inscriptions of calligraphic letters.

According to Humaid, interest in origami is on the rise in Gaza. He noted that "people are very interested it because the work is new, beautiful and exciting. It is a new style and culture for our country that entered Gaza and the Arab society."

The Palestinian artist said that he had learned about origami on the Internet. He made his first origami work in October, which took him some 15 hours to complete. Since then, he reportedly sold about 45 works locally, which has turned his origami work into a source of income.
