Yemen: UN monitoring chief Cammaert returns to Hodeidah

Yemen, Hodeidah

The head of the UN’s ceasefire monitoring team Major General Patrick Cammaert has returned to Hodeidah, to resume his role, after reports were confirmed that he would soon be leaving his position.

Cammaert spoke with Houthi officials at the port on Monday and visited the Al-Thawra Hospital where he discussed difficulties surrounding healthcare in the port city.

United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths confirmed on Monday that Cammaert would be leaving his position, but denied that this was due to disagreements between him and the retired Dutch general, and dismissed the possibility that it was related to a shooting incident with Cammaert’s convoy in Hodeidah.

The Hodeidah ceasefire agreement was struck in Sweden, in late December 2018 and saw warring Houthi forces and Saudi-backed coalition forces reach a settlement regarding the Red Sea port.

Although the truce came into effect on December 18, 2018, sporadic outbreaks of violence have continued, plans for an exchange of prisoners have stalled, and neither side has yet fulfilled commitments to withdraw forces from the city.
