Robot snowploughs battled it out in a cold corner of Toronto on Saturday, as teams from across the US took part in the 9th Annual Autonomous Snowplow Competition.

The robotic machines were judged on their ability to clear a staged snow covered pavement while also avoiding obstacles, all without human intervention or any pre-programmed path.

A member of the team behind the winning 'Wendigo 2019' snowplough explained that the software behind the project has valued beyond simple pushing snow, commenting that "to have a vehicle that can autonomously navigate there's a wide variety of purposes that these can be used for everything from garbage removal, maintenance."
