France: Thousands gather in Paris to protest high school reform and low wages
Thousands of high school students and teachers have gathered in the streets of Paris on Thursday to protest a new education reform targeting high schools, and to demand higher wages for teachers.
Footage shows large numbers of protesters carrying signs while marching through Paris.
“The reform which is imposed on high school students today makes it so that, depending on the school to which students are attached, will have different options for what they can study,” says Marine, a high school teacher and protester.
“Meaning that some specialties will open in some schools and not others, for only budgetary reasons,” she added.
Until 2019, years 12 and 13 in France were divided into three categories: science, social and economic studies, and literature. The reform, which is being implemented by Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer, does away with these three categories in favour of a system where students are required to choose three out of a dozen specialties, all of which are not available in every school.
