France: Fans hold memorial for missing former FC Nantes striker Sala
Football fans in the northwestern French city of Nantes held a memorial in honour of missing former FC Nantes striker Emiliano Sala, who was a passenger in a light aircraft that disappeared near Guernsey on Monday night.
Supporters chanted Sala's name and laid yellow flowers in the city's central Place Royale for the missing player, who scored 12 goals in 16 appearances for the club in the latest season of the Ligue 1.
The 28-year-old Argentine was flying from Nantes to Cardiff, the home of his new club Cardiff City, when the plane he was travelling on reportedly requested permission to descend from Guernsey air traffic control, but then subsequently lost contact and disappeared off the radar.
After an extensive search by teams from the Channel Islands, France and the UK, rescue efforts were suspended on Tuesday and with no signs of the aircraft being discovered, it is reportedly likely that those on board may have perished.
