Switzerland: US ‘looking for Russia to change its behaviour’ - Pompeo to WEF
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US and Russia are "not doomed to a cold war rivalry" but that the US expects a change of attitude from Moscow, while speaking via satellite at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss city of Davos on Tuesday.
"It's not the case that we are doomed to a cold war rivalry. These two nations are the largest possessors of nuclear capability in the world," he said. Pompeo added: "We need to ensure that there are conversations taking place so that we can prevent both proliferation and the rest that comes with the possession of those nuclear weapons."
"We are looking for Russia to begin to change its behaviour, whether that's a behaviour in Ukraine, or the work that it did to influence elections here in the United States, and what it's done to influence elections all across the world," said Pompeo.
The US Secretary of State also mentioned US relations with China, expressing his optimism regarding the upcoming trade delegations' meetings and stressing that the United States will stick to the objective of fair and reciprocal trade arrangements.
Political and business leaders are attending the World Economic Forum from Tuesday, 22 January to Friday, 25 January. Pompeo and the US delegation did not join due to the ongoing government shutdown crippling Washington DC, which had prompted US President Donald Trump to cancel' the delegation's visit.
