Afghanistan: At least 40 killed in suicide attack on Wardak military base
At least 40 people were reportedly killed while dozens more were wounded in a suicide car bomb attack on the country's intelligence agency base in Maidan Shar, Wardak Province, on Monday.
According to local officials, the target of the attack was a training centre for pro-government militia members run by the National Directorate of Security (NDS).
An eyewitness said that "at around 07:00, a heavy explosion occurred" which broke window panes in the area. "Ambulances transferred injured people dead bodies from the scene of attack to the hospital," he added.
The attack began after a vehicle loaded with explosives rammed into the entrance of a compound. At least three gunmen, reportedly, stormed the base following the explosion. According to a provincial official, the attackers were later killed during a firefight with Afghan security forces.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the assault.
