Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onufry led the Epiphany celebrations at the Dnipro river in Kiev on Saturday.

After he consecrated the baptistery, an ice hole in the river, by reading a prayer over it and submerging a cross into the water, hundreds of believers entered the river and took a triple plunge, according to the Orthodox tradition.

The ritual is believed not only to cleanse the soul and strengthen faith, but also purify the body and relieve people of diseases.

Traditionally bathing in ice-cold rivers and ponds takes place during the night of January 18-19 to celebrate the Orthodox Christian holiday of the baptism of Jesus.
