Spain: Rescuers to begin vertical drilling with hope to save toddler who fell into borehole
The rescue operation to save a two-year-old boy who fell down a well in Totalan near the southern city of Malaga continued on Thursday.
Spokesperson of the College of Engineers, Mines and Roads, Angel Garcia Vidal told reporters that the work was progressing well and that they would begin vertical drilling tomorrow.
The rescue operation has been complicated by the nature of the terrain, the dimensions of the hole - 25cm (10in) wide and 110m (335ft) deep - and by the fact that dirt has fallen from the sides and blocked the bottom of the well, where the toddler, Julen Jimenez, is expected to be.
A crew of over 100 emergency service workers, machinists, technicians, and miners are working to rescue the toddler, who fell down the hole on Sunday while playing as his family were having a picnic nearby.
