Livestock and farmers jumped over open bonfires as part of a ritual procession held in honour of the annual Makara Sankranti harvest festival in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka on Tuesday.
The Sankranti ('change of direction' in Hindi) festival coincides with a solar event marking the arrival of the spring season, which is the day the sun transitions into Makara (Capricorn) at the end of the winter solstice.
As part of the 'Kichchu Haayisuvudu' ritual, farmers adorn their livestock with flowers and have them jump over burning bales hay.
