
Syria: New UN Special Envoy Pedersen arrives in Damascus for talks
The newly-appointed UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen arrived in Damascus on Tuesday for his first visit to Syria in the role.
Pedersen was appointed in October 2018, after previous UN Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura stepped down citing personal reasons. Pedersen is a Norwegian diplomat who for many years served as an ambassador and worked with the United Nations. He was Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations from 2012 to 2017.
Pedersen will stay in Syria for three days and meet with representatives of the Syrian government.
