The Confederation of African Football (CAF) picked Egypt to host the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2019, following a vote in Dakar on Tuesday.

Cameroon was originally supposed to host the competition, but in November 2018 the country was stripped of hosting the event due to delays in building the required infrastructure. Egypt was in competition with South Africa to host the competition. Egypt won 16 votes to one with one abstention.

The announcement was made by the President of the CAF, Ahmad Ahmad, after the meeting of the executive committee. Egypt now has six months to prepare for the recently expanded 24-team competition.

Egypt hosted the CAN five times and is still the most successful team in the competition with seven victories.
