Russia: Syrian govt should take control of US-held areas after troops’ withdrawal
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the control of Syrian areas held by the United States should be given to the Syrian government after Washington pulls its troops out of the country, speaking during her weekly briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.
“There is, of course, the fundamental question, who will be transferred control over the territories left by the Americans?” the spokesperson asked.
“This should be the Syrian government under international law and based on the path Syria and the Syrian people have went through. But so far we have no information about any contacts between Washington and Damascus on this issue,” Zakharova said.
Zakharova also discussed the tension between Russia and Ukraine, saying Moscow hopes Kiev refrains from new provocations in the Kerch Strait.
“Apparently, the recent incident with the Ukrainian sailors, who became hostages of the aggressive policy of the Maidan authorities, did not teach anyone anything,” she said.
“We expect that the Western curators of Ukraine will not only refrain from participating in this insane initiative, but also find ways to reason the ruling regime in Kiev and force it to refuse to take rash steps that could lead to another escalation in the region,” the spokesperson concluded.
