Indonesia: Western Java residents describe moment deadly tsunami hit
Footage shows the devastation in western Java's Pandeglang regency, Indonesia, on Monday, following a deadly tsunami that killed at least 373 people and left over 1,000 injured. The country's disaster management agency reported that at least 128 people are also missing.
The cause of the tsunami has been confirmed to be an underwater landslide caused by the eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait. Residents received no early warning before the tsunami hit as Indonesia's detection apparatus is reportedly only set up to detect waves caused by earthquakes.
A local man described his family's experience of the disaster, saying that "suddenly my house was filled with water, I suddenly grabbed my wife and two children, broke the glass windows near the door and escaped from the tsunami."
Another resident likened the event to the 2004 Boxing Day tsunamis that killed over 100,000 people in Indonesia alone.
