UN: Lebanon, Israel exchange blame over 'tunnel' escalation

United Nations, New York City

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting in New York City on Wednesday to address the recent escalation between Lebanon and Israel, after the discovery of tunnels crossing into Israel allegedly built by Hezbollah.

The representative of Israel to the UN Danny Danon blamed Hezbollah of building a terminal of terror and "violating" the 1701 Security Council Resolution.

He warned that if Hezbollah "will have the arrogance to attack Israel, we will bury it in the rubble of Lebanon."

Lebanese ambassador to the UN Amal Mudallali said that Lebanon has "no aggressive intentions" and added that the matter in hand is Israel's "daily violations of the Lebanese sovereignty."

According to Mudallali, Lebanon is worried about "double standards" within the UNSC where Lebanese reports are discarded while Israel's complaints are heard.

The US representative stated the United States "strongly support Israel's efforts to defend its sovereignty" and called on Lebanese President Michel Aoun "to halt Hezbollah's illicit tunnelling into Israel."

Additional peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have been stationed on the Israel-Lebanon border after Israel claimed the discovery of tunnels allegedly built by Hezbollah near the northern Israeli town of Metula on December 4. A majority of representatives in the meeting stressed the importance of granting UNIFIL sufficient access in the area as to ensure the peace between Israel and Lebanon.
