Belgium: Thousands protest UN migration pact in Brussels
SCRIPT
Around 5,500 people took to the streets of Brussels on Sunday, to protest against the Belgian government acceding to the UN migration pact that was drafted in Morocco in July.
Protesters waved the flag of Flanders and symbols of the far-right Flemish nationalist Voorpost group were also on display, as they marched through the city to the Berlaymont building, which houses the headquarters of the EU Commission.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel lost his parliamentary majority after the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) party exited the ruling coalition due to their opposition to the non-legally binding compact last week. Michel remains in office as the head of a minority government.
The non-legally binding Global Compact for Migration which covers international migration in all aspects was concluded in July and is expected to be adopted by UN member states in December.
