      Jordan: Protesters scuffle with police at rally against austerity

      Police and protesters scuffled in the Jordanian capital Amman on Thursday night, at a demonstration held against austerity measures. Police reportedly used tear gas and forced the protesters to disperse.

      The protest was held against IMF-backed austerity measures, and against a recent cybercrime law; and to demand economic and political reforms aimed at fighting corruption.

      Security forces reportedly attempted to prevent the demonstrators from marching through the area where the Jordanian prime minister lives, firing tear gas to disperse the protesters. According to a later statement, at least five members of the security forces were wounded during the clashes, reports say. The number of injured protesters is unclear.
