Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled a monument to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in Moscow on Tuesday, exactly 100 years since the writer’s birth.

“His heart, soul, thoughts were filled with both pain for the Fatherland and boundless love for it. These feelings moved all his work,” Putin said.

“He clearly separated the true, real, people's Russia and the features of the totalitarian system, which brought suffering and severe trials for millions of people. But even being in exile, Alexander Isaevich did not allow anyone to scornfully, speak evil of his homeland, [he] opposed any manifestations of Russophobia,” the Russian leader added.
