NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg kicked off the last ministerial meeting in Brussels on Wednesday with a focus on security issues in Afghanistan.

"The security situation in Afghanistan remains difficult," said the NATO chief who lamented the number of high-profile terror attacks carried out on Afghan soil in the past few months.

"We are in Afghanistan to help the Afghan people, but we are also in Afghanistan to help ourselves," added Stoltenberg, who emphasised NATO’s resolve to prevent Afghanistan becoming a ‘safe haven’ for terrorism again.

The NATO foreign ministers' meetings have been taking place in Brussels on December 4 and 5 and have addressed a range of issues including the recent Kerch Strait incident, extremism in the Middle East and North Africa, and the INF Treaty in addition to the situation in Afghanistan.
