Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed the military's operation to destroy underground cross-border tunnels which he said were dug by Iran-backed Hezbollah militants from Lebanon, in a statement from the Defence Ministry in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.

According to Netanyahu, the decision to attack the tunnels was taken weeks ago and went into action on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to the media, Netanyahu stressed that Lebanon would be held responsible for "all terror activity, emanating from Lebanon against Israel, like any other nation."

"Israel maintains the right to defend itself. We will continue to do all that is necessary to defend ourselves against Iran's efforts to use Lebanon, Syria and Gaza as forward terror bases to attack Israel," he added.
