      Germany: CDU candidates give final speeches ahead of vote for party head

      The three candidates for the next head of the CDU party presented themselves for the last time ahead of the leadership vote, at the 8th regional party conference in Berlin on Friday.

      Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Jens Spahn and Friedrich Merz each gave a short introductory speech before taking the hot seat for two hours, and took questions from CDU members on a variety of topics.

      With Chancellor Angela Merkel stepping down as the head of the party, the vote for a successor will be decided at a party convention in Hamburg next weekend.
