USA: Trump 'not happy' about Kerch Strait incident

United States, Washington DC
November 27, 2018 at 02:45 GMT +00:00 · Published

US President Donald Trump said that he was "not happy at all" about the Kerch Strait incident, speaking from outside the White House in Washington DC on Monday.

"Not good. We’re not happy about it at all", he said, following a question on how Russia's Coast Guard detained three Ukrainian vessels after they breached Russia's Black Sea waters on Sunday.

"We’ve let our position be known, and we’re not happy about it", he continued.

According to Ukrainian authorities, their vessels had a right to pass freely over the Kerch Strait based on international law. The Ukrainian parliament has since approved President Petro Poroshenko's request to introduce martial law in the border regions of the country for 30 days, starting from 28 November.

Trump then went on to discuss the Mexican-US border issue, reiterating his stance that the migrant caravan will not be allowed into the country. "Mexico wants to see if they can get it straightened out. But we’ve, during certain times, as you know, closed the border. They’re not coming into the United States. They will not be coming into our country," he claimed.

Commenting on the migrants' attempt to force their way through the border, Trump said, "they [US border guards] were being rushed by some very tough people, and they used tear gas. And here’s the bottom line: Nobody is coming into our country unless they come in legally."

The US leader also commented on the Brexit plan that UK Prime Minister Theresa May has been discussing with leaders of the European Union in recent days, saying, "Sounds like a great deal for the EU."

"As the deal stands, she may not — they may not be able to trade with the U.S. And I don’t think they want that at all. That would be a very big negative for the deal," he added.
