Ukraine: National Corps demand Azov treaty termination after Russia detains vessels
Hundreds of National Corps members and supporters took to the streets of Kiev on Monday to demand the termination of a 2003 treaty with Russia regarding the Kerch Strait and Sea of Azov, after Russia's Coast Guard detained three Ukrainian vessels in Black Sea waters on Sunday.
Protesters carried flags with the Ukrainian national symbol, the trident, and marched on the Ukrainian parliament Verkhovna Rada, where a vote on the implementation of martial law is expected later.
According to a representative from the National Corps Rodion Kudryashov, if imposed, martial law should not last more than thirty days as to not disrupt the presidential elections planned for March 2019.
the introduction of martial law is aimless and irresponsible if relations with regard to the Sea of Azov are not broken," added Kudryashov, referring to the 2003 agreement.
Protesters set up a banner outside the parliament reading "Don't back down."
On Sunday, Russia's Coast Guard detained three Ukrainian vessels after they breached Russia's Black Sea waters.
According to Ukrainian authorities, their vessels had a right to pass freely over the Kerch Strait based on international law.
