The regional court of Ruse has referred the man suspected of killing Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova for physiological evaluation on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Bulgarian national Severin Krasimirov would be evaluated for competency after an initial investigation revealed he has had a history of psychiatric issues.

"He used to attend a school for children with development problems and has a certificate for low capacity for work," said regional prosecutor for Ruse Georgi Georgiev after the court session.

According the Bulgarian prosecution office, Krasimirov tried to inflict wounds on himself using clippers as he awaited extradition.

Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova was found raped and murdered in the north-eastern town of Ruse on October 6.

The Bulgarian government later arrested Krassimirov in Germany. The suspect lived close to the crime scene and left the country for Germany on October 7, the day after the rape and murder.
