Netherlands: Russia and US trade barbs over chemical weapons

Netherlands, The Hague
November 19, 2018 at 14:18 GMT +00:00 · Published

The United States and Russia traded barbs and accusations of hypocrisy over the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' (OPCW) new ability to attribute blame for chemical weapons attacks at a meeting in the Hague on Monday.

Russia put forward a proposal to have experts scrutinise the legality of the June motion, which it opposed on the basis that the watchdog's new powers could infringe the properties of the UN Security Council. The United Kingdom accused Russia of attempting to stall the implementation of the decision and "fatally undermine" the OPCW's functionality.

US Envoy Kenneth Ward echoed these sentiments, saying: "Coming from the Russian Federation, I might be euphemistic and say ironic, but frankly it is pungent hypocrisy. What have they done for the last few years but to connive with their Syrian ally, trying to bury the truth of what has happened in Syria, alongside the dead from the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime. And as if that wasn't bad enough, Salisbury comes along."

Russian envoy Alexander Shulgin hit back at the US, accusing them of using "psychological pressure" to sway the opinions of other member states and demonise Russia.

The Syrian Arab also launched a scathing attack towards the US and their allies, accusing them of "hypocrisy, lies and hostility" and of killing hundreds of Syrian civilians in attacks in the last two months.

The meeting is the first to be held since the expulsion of four Russians accused of hacking into the OPCW's computer system by Dutch authorities.
