Syria: 'Shame on US' - Kobane Kurds following Turkish offensive

Syrian Arab Republic, Kobane

Syrian Kurds condemned the US for what they believe is tacit support to a Turkish offensive into Kurdish-held areas along the Syrian border, in Kobane on Thursday.

A large audience containing some fighters from People's Protection Units (YPG) can be seen listening to speeches and waving symbols of Kurdish nationalism. The protest was timed to coincide with World Kobane Day, marking the four-year anniversary since the Kurdish-run city came under siege from Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).

Lawyer Shaheen Al-Ali was indignant about the Turkish-US duplicity. "We demand the US to stop this attack, because it is us who resisted IS on behalf of the whole world."

That disappointment was echoed by local politician Hameed Al-Abd. "We demand the support, and we call for it from the International Community and the US, for we fought against terrorism, it was not Turkey who did that, we fought against terrorism and ISIS," he said in response to a question about the role of the US in the conflict.

Turkish forces launched a new round of artillery attacks last weekend, as it seeks to crush Kurdish forces along the breadth of the border. In a speech to parliament last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reportedly said: "We will destroy the terror structure east of the Euphrates River. We have completed preparations and plans regarding this issue."

In response, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) whose main contingent is the YPG brought their offensive against ISIS in Deir ez-Zor's Hajin pocket to a halt. The US collaborates closely with the YPG, sending arms and around 2,000 special forces. Ankara and Washington recently began joint patrols along the northern border, despite clashes between Turkey and the US's Kurdish allies.
