Germany: 'Nothing will change' - Merkel on her int'l position after CDU resignation

German Chancellor Angela Merkel dismissed concerns that her decision to step down as the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader would affect her current position on the world stage, while speaking in Berlin on Tuesday, alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, who arrived in Germany on Sunday on a four-day visit to participate in the G20 Compact with Africa summit. .

"I don't believe that anything will change about the position in international negotiations. One can even say I have more time to concentrate on my tasks as the head of government," Merkel said.

In response to the question about the list of possible successors, she reiterated that she was reluctant to interfere into the process of choosing the candidates.

"As a predecessor, I've learned it during my political life, one shouldn't influence the debates about the successor, because it has never worked."

During the press event, Merkel underlined the importance of cooperation with Egypt, putting emphasis on migration.

"We discussed here the fact that Egypt perfectly protects its maritime borders so that de facto there is no migration from Egypt towards Europe, although many refugees live in Egypt. It deserves a high recognition," she said.

On his end, al-Sisi highlighted the strength of Egyptian-German relations, as well as his "respect and admiration" for Merkel's administration.

"I would like to tell you, that in Egypt, we have a lot of respect and admiration for you, and for all what you've done for all those refugees that you've received here in Germany," he said.
