Mexico: Pompeo meets Mexican counterpart to discuss Honduran migrant caravan
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Mexico City on Saturday to hold talks with his Mexican counterpart Luis Videgaray after at least a thousand Honduran migrants arrived on the southern Mexican border in an attempt to flee to the United States.
The caravan of migrants, mostly fleeing poverty and violence, arrived on the border of Guatemala and Mexico on Friday and clashed with Mexican police, who used tear gas on the crowd.
US Vice President Mike Pence urged leaders in the region to tell their citizens not to make the journey, while Trump also threatened to cut the foreign aid of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala if they did not comply.
Mexican authorities have requested the United Nations to set up a migrant processing centre near the border.
