UK: Brexit deal still 'achievable' says Theresa May despite Northern Ireland deadlock

A Brexit deal is "still achievable" despite differences between the EU and Britain over the Northern Ireland border issue, said UK Prime Minister Theresa May in the House of Commons in London on Monday.

"We cannot let this disagreement derail the prospects of a good deal and leave us with a no deal outcome that no one wants. I continue to believe that a negotiated deal is the best outcome for the UK and for the European Union," she said, referring to the Northern Ireland and Ireland border issue.

Speaking about an EU-proposed backstop, according to which Northern Ireland may stay in the customs union, May said: "we have been clear that we cannot agree to anything that threatens the integrity of our united kingdom."

Commenting on London's proposal to keep the whole of the UK in the EU customs union for a limited period after the transition, May stated that the measure would have only a temporary character.

"People are rightly concerned that what is only meant to be temporary could become a permanent limbo with no new relationship between the UK and the EU ever agreed. I'm clear we are not going to be trapped permanently in a single customs territory, unable to do meaningful trade deals," the British prime minister said.
