Germany: Merkel determined to ‘win trust back’ after Bavaria election blow

German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised to restore trust in her government, when speaking at an event of the BGA trade body in Berlin on Monday.

Commenting on Sunday's election in Bavaria, which saw a historic loss for the Christian Social Union (CSU), Merkel said: "It has shown that even the best economic data and full employment in almost all parts in Bavaria are not enough for the people, if something very important is lacking, which is trust, trust in the political actors."

"My lesson from yesterday is that I, as Chancellor, have to make sure that the trust is won back and that also the results of our work are more visible. And I will work on that with as much vigour as I can," Merkel added.

On Sunday, the CSU suffered its worst election result in 68 years, losing around 12 percent of their share, compared to their 2013 numbers, and now sitting on 35.5 percent at the Bavarian Parliament.
