Turkey: Third party may be involved in Khashoggi disappearance - Erdogan adviser

Turkish authorities are not ruling out the possibility of third-party involvement in the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, said Yasin Aktay, an adviser to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, in an exclusive interview with RT filmed in Antalya on Monday.

"Because this situation is bad for both sides [Turkey and Saudi Arabia]. Saudi Arabia is not interested in anything like this happening on the territory of Turkey," he explained.

Aktay, who claimed he was a friend of Khashoggi, believed the journalist felt secure in Turkey. "He always insisted that he couldn't imagine that something bad happens to him on the Turkish territory, for example kidnapping. He always believed that Saudi Arabia pays a lot of attention to maintaining good relations with Turkey. By the way, he himself played a big role in developing these relations," Aktay noted.

Erdogan's adviser also said that Turkish officials are investigating the case and checking the CCTV cameras around Istanbul, including those in airports.

He concluded by saying he hoped to receive an explanation from the Saudi side. "If they don't do that, it would mean that they don't have an answer. And it will indicate that the suspicions are not groundless," he said.
