Belgium: NATO stands by UK, Dutch cyberattack accusations vs Russia - Stoltenberg

NATO supports the Dutch and British governments' accusations that Russian intelligence agencies had conducted a number of cyberattacks, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels on Thursday, before calling on Moscow to stop what he described as its "its reckless pattern of behaviour."

"NATO allies expressed their solidarity with the decision by the Dutch and the British governments to call out Russia on its blatant attempt to undermine international law and international institutions," Stoltenberg said at a press conference following a NATO Defence Ministers' meeting.

NATO members would respond by continuing to strengthen their cyberdefence capabilities, Stoltenberg said before announcing that cyber attacks will be able to trigger Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an attack on one NATO member is an attack on all members.

Stoltenberg's statements come after Dutch Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten said that Dutch intelligence had disrupted a cyber operation allegedly conducted by the Russian military intelligence service, GRU, against the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) headquarters in The Hague.

Four Russian nationals have been expelled from the Netherlands on suspicion of their involvement in the alleged attack. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has since described the accusations as "big fantasies."
