Germany: Protest held in Cologne as Erdogan arrives to open mosque
Protesters gathered in Cologne on Saturday, to demonstrate against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit.
Erdogan is scheduled to open a mosque in the German city, an event which marks the end of a three-day visit to Germany.
Protesters held banners featuring anti-Erdogan slogans and waved flags of Kurdistan. One demonstrator said “I am here because there are no democratic rights in Turkey, Erdogan is a fascist and it’s not okay to bring him to Europe.“
The Turkish leader met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Friday, in a bid to ease tensions between the two countries, which have clashed over human rights issues and the detention of German journalists.
