Hundreds of Shia Muslims gathered to engage in self-flagellation to commemorate Ashura in Baghdad's Sadr City on Thursday.
Mourners can be seen cutting themselves with knives and whipping their backs to honour the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, in one of the many similar ceremonies that take place around the world on this day.
Ashura, which takes place on the tenth day of Muharram in the the Islamic Hijri calendar, is a day of mourning which commemorates the killing of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as his family and companions at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram, 61 AH (10 October 680 AD).
