France: Fmr security head Benalla has ‘deep regret’ over senator comments

The former head of security for the president's engagements Alexandre Benalla apologised to French Senators in Paris on Wednesday during a hearing regarding a scandal in which he is embroiled.

Benalla said on September 11, during an interview, that he did not have respect for commission of enquiry and called its president, Senator Philippe Bas, 'a little marquess.'

"I have a deep regret for what I said about you, Mr. Chairman, because whatever the circumstances, whatever the pressure, it is not excusable and I'm sorry that I said what I said during the interview," said Benalla.

He also clarified that he "was not the bodyguard of Emmanuel Macron and I was never the bodyguard of Emmanuel Macron."

Benalla, 26, was the head of security for the president's engagements.

On May 1, during clashes between the police and protesters, a man was recorded grabbing a woman by the neck and charging her down the street.

Shortly afterwards, the same man returned and was seen attacking another protester.

The person in question has been identified as Benalla.

Benalla was fired from his position after the video went public.

He was detained and taken into police custody, where he faces charges of assault and impersonating a police officer.
