State of Palestine: 'Gaza Sky Geeks' turn to coding to transcend barriers
Dozens of aspiring programmers could be seen typing codes into their laptops at Gaza's first tech hub, dubbed 'Sky Geek', in the Gaza Strip on Sunday.
The Gaza Sky Geeks initiative was launched with funding from the Mercy Corps international charity and tech giant Google in 2011 in a bid to create jobs for the youths.
Gaza's first coding academy was launched last year, with the support of the UK-based computer training company Founders and Coders. Around 16 students, half of whom are female, were enrolled in the first training course.
According to Gaza Sky Geeks Academy Programme Coordinator Ghada Ibrahim, the tech hub is set to expand into the other side of Palestine, with the launch of West Bank's first coding academy this October.
She added: "This is our way to spread the knowledge across Palestine, and hopefully elsewhere in the world."
Ibrahim said that the aim of the initiative is to turn Gaza into a "major player in the tech revolution in the whole world, not only in the region."
