Ukraine: Russian politicians pay tribute to slain head of Donetsk

Thousands of mourners gave a round of applause as the funeral cortege carrying the casket of slain former leader of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko moved towards his final resting place in Donetsk on Sunday.

Member of Parliament Natalia Poklonskaya and Prime Minister of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov were among those who came to pay tribute to Zakharchenko.

"Not only all of Donbass is mourning today. We are mourning, Crimea is mourning, all of Russia is mourning, France is mourning," said Poklonskaya. Talking about those who could be behind the killing, she said that "only disgraceful jackals were able to commit this cowardly and cynical assassination."

According to preliminary estimates by the Donetsk Administration, more than 120 ,000 people who joined the memorial ceremony which took place at the Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Zakharchenko was killed by a blast at the central Donetsk's cafe Separ on August 31.

Besides the former Republic's head, his bodyguard died and Minister of income and changes Alexander Timofeev was seriously injured in an explosion.
