Israel: Netanyahu lauds US decision to end all UNRWA funding

Israel, Yad Binyamin

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his support for the US decision to stop funding the UN's Palestinian refugee agency, speaking at Yad Binyamin on Sunday.

Netanyahu accused the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) of "perpetuating" the plight of refugees.

He said: "We have to cancel the refugee institution, we have to take the money and really help to rehabilitate the refugees, whose real number is only a tiny fraction of the number reported by UNRWA."

The US State Department announced in a statement on Friday that it had determined the organisation to be "irredeemably flawed" and would be withdrawing all funding. The US contributed US $355 million (€305 million) to UNWRA in 2016 and released US $60 million (€43 million) of their allocated funding earlier this year, before announcing the cuts.
