UN: Russian and British ambassadors clash over 'chemical weapons use' in Syria

United Nations, New York
August 28, 2018 at 22:57 GMT -00:00 · Published

The British and Russian Permanent Representatives to the United Nations (UN), Karen Pierce and Vassily Nebenzia, fired accusation and counter-accusation over the possible use of chemical weapons in the Syrian civil war, after a UN Security Council closed consultation in New York on Tuesday.

Nebenzia said the Russian Federation was "deeply concerned" by a joint statement issued by the United States, France and Britain, which warned that government forces could use chemical weapons in a possible assault on Idlib.

He claimed such a statement would be seen "as an invitation to the armed rebel groups to stage another chemical attacks" and "a pretext of military strikes against Syria".

Responding the Russian allegations about western and United Kingdom involvement in the supply of chemical weapons to militants, Pierce told reporters that "this is an effort to distract from an imminent attack on Idlib."

She repeatedly refuted Russian claims, before calling on Syria and Russia to allow the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to conduct chemical weapons inspections.
