Germany: Chemnitz residents react to violent anti-immigration protests

Reporter: "Which side?"

Thomas Reuter, Resident of Chemnitz: "I was on the side pro-Chemnitz, that is a little bit on the right side because here, [there] are a lot of problems with the immigrations, yes, and I think the German news do not speak about everything so now we have two deaths, not one, yes, and if you have seen this place here behind me, there are a lot of crimes, they deal with drugs and so on, they steal everything and so on and there is too much in Germany. I think we must help people but now it is too much, yes."

Reporter: "So, it is not about refugees?"

Thomas Reuter, Resident of Chemnitz: "Yes, yes, it is a lot of problem about refugees and a lot of refugees came not from countries there are war. They came from Morocco, they came from Tunisia, and that is the problem and they make the crime. Often the people from Syria are not the big problem but the people from North Africa, that's the problem that we have in Germany, yes."

Tensions were still palpable in the Saxony city of Chemnitz on Monday, as locals voiced their concerns over the weekend's chaotic anti-migrant protests, following the fatal stabbing of a 35 year-old the day before.

"[Chemnitz] is not a city of fascists," said Tom Funke who assured that refugee violence was atypical of the East German city.

Right wing protester Thomas Reuter disagreed with this stance however, claiming that German media has misrepresented the facts and that the town's problems are linked to refugees.

At least six people were injured in the eastern German city of Chemnitz on Monday as police struggled to contain riots that took hold after a 35 year-old man was killed in a reported dispute in the early hours of Sunday morning, following a fight at a city festival. Two male suspects, aged 22 and 23 respectively, from Iraq and Syria, have since been arrested.
