Switzerland: Myanmar military leaders accused of genocide against Rohingya- UN fact-finders

Myanmar's military leaders have to be prosecuted for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes against the Rohingya, according to a report based on the UN's fact finding mission released in Geneva, Monday.

The report accuses the Tatmandow, the Myanmar military, of murder, imprisonment and sexual violence against the Rohingyas.

"The fact finding mission has concluded, on reasonable grounds, that the patterns of gross human rights violations and serious violations of international humanitarian law that it is found amount to the gravest crimes of international law. These have principally been committed by the military, the Tatmadaw. The mission has concluded, that criminal investigation and prosecution is warranted, focusing on the top Tatmadow generals, in relation to the three categories of crimes under international law; genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes", introduced Member of the Independent International Fact-finding Mission on Myanmar Christopher Sidoti.

"These include rape, gang rape, sexual slavery, force nudity, and mutilations", stated member Radhika Coomaraswamy.

"In Myanmar there is a clear change of command, and there is no doubt in our minds, whatsoever, that what we saw happening in Rakhine, as a whole, would not have happened without, firstly, being in the knowledge of the senior military leadership, and, secondly, under their effective control.", said Sidoti. The report encourages the case to be referred to the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Last year, Rohingya militants carried out a series of attacks against Myanmar security forces, leaving 12 police officers dead. It triggered a crackdown by the Myanmar military, with widespread reports of indiscriminate killings, arson, looting and rape.

According the UN, more than 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar as a result of the conflict.
