Afghanistan: Eyewitnesses recount attack on Kabul's presidential compound

Eyewitnesses of Tuesday's missile attack on Kabul's presidential palace recounted events as they had seen them, Wednesday.

The attack was carried out as President Ashraf Ghani delivered a speech to mark the beginning of the Eid al-Adha holiday.

According to authorities, one rocket landed near the presidential palace, where Ghani was giving his speech, and a second one near a NATO compound and the US Embassy.

One eyewitness, Abdullah, said that following Eid prayers he had entered a nearby market where militants took him captive. "One of the insurgents beat me. The insurgents took us outside and launched rockets towards the government offices close to the presidential palace," he said.

"The police fired on us because they thought we were insurgents. I shouted that we are not the insurgents," he added.

Feda Mohammad, a school teacher and part-time taxi driver, described how he had fled the scene of the attack. "I escaped from there, first of all as soon as I could, I secured my family. When I came back to save my car it was burning. That car was everything that I could support my family with," he stated.

After the assault, military helicopters reportedly fired at the assailants near Eidgah Mosque in Reka Khana district.

The area near the attack was seen littered with burnt out vehicles in the wake of the counter-attack.

Afghan officials said the Taliban was behind the incident, but in a statement the militant group said it had not carried out the attacks. The self-proclaimed Islamic State later released a statement saying its fighters had launched mortar rounds at the presidential palace.
